My Museum Memories

At Comics Art Musuem,Brussels

Growing up a visit to the museum was always on the itinerary whichever place we went to as a place. One of the first museum I saw was Louvre,Paris way back in the year 1998. Off course back then I was bored and now I am trying to book a virtual tour of the same. The other museum my Mom – Dad showed me on the same trip was the Van Gough Museum in Amsterdam. Though I didn’t comprehend much back then, I feel those visits did germinate the museum buff in me. The first museum I remember mesmerized by was a doll museum. The kid me was in awe looking at the variety of dolls from countries all around, adorned with clothes I hadn’t seen before. I don’t remember the museum’s name now. Tried asking my parent, funnily they don’t recall taking me there. Anyhow had the same feeling when I went to GardeRobe MannekenPis in Belgium, Brussels. A place that really caught my attention was the Comics Art Museum situated in Brussels,Belgium. The museum was packed with information about comic books and the creators who produced them.

Over the last few years, I started wondering, why do we visit museums only when we are at new location. I had an impulse to compile a list of museums in the city I lived in, and did so.

Display at the Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum

I came to know that there are about twenty-nine in Pune only (correct me if I am wrong). Amongst them, the first on my list was Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum. Luckily, I got an opportunity to walk-through the museum with Paathil Heritage. (A heritage company) Following that, I visited the Joshi’s Museum of Miniature Railways. Frankly didn’t find it that impressive. Pune also has a museum dedicated to cricket, Blades of Glory. I came to know about the museum when I had taken the Pune Darshan Tour. Besides these I had even gone to the museums situated in Deccan college. Since it was a rush through visit, I am planning to go again whenever its possible.

Herostones at Bharat Itihas Sanshodhak Mandal,Pune

Digging deeper, I remember having been to a place called Bharat Itihas Sanshodhak Mandal. This wonderful location was introduced to me by a heritage group.

Displays on literary works, miniature drawings, and world atlases; to name a few can be found here. Hero stones are mounted at the entrance of one of the rooms. The displays at Vishrambaug Wada are also worth a mention. A few museums have been recommended by my friends as well. Vikram Pendse Cycle Museum tops the list.

A display that caught my attention at CSMVS

Then I shifted to Mumbai, and yes, the first museum I set my foot in was CSMVS or Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (Previously known as Prince of Wales Museum of Western India). Any heritage enthusiast who’s been there can vouch for it that’s impossible to see the entire museum within a day. Besides the exhibits, the best part about CSMVS are the audio guides. One can just absorb in the information slowly at their own pace. After soaking in the richness of India’s history and culture, I went to a place where money is the only thing that matters. For those who couldn’t guess I had gone to the RBI Monetary Museum.

Magnificent Entrance of Dr.Bhau Daji Lad Museum

Later on, I went to Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum, situated in Byculla. Though it may look like a small place from the outside, the interiors are filled with vast knowledge about Mumbai. l was taken aback by the entrance, which can be clearly seen from the image.

Mahatma Gandhi’s belongings at Mani Bhavan

During one of my heritage walks I stumbled upon Mani Bhavan, a place dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi’s life in Mumbai.

An Indian Museum that has remained itched in my memory is Don Bosco Museum. It’s multistoried building located in Shillong. It highlights the rich heritage and tradition of the citizens of India’s North East. Truly an eyeopener for me. During my college days, I had even been to Visvesvarya Industrial and Technological Museum in Bengaluru. A paradise for science lovers.

Wall Clocks at Goa Chitra Museum

I have even gone to museums in Goa, yes you read that right. I just fell in love with Goa Chitra Museum. The space is divided into three rooms, each filled with Goan culture and traditions.

The gallery situated at Cellular Jail Museum,Port Blair

I went to two, no wait three museums this year, that’s 2021.Starting with the one present at the Cellular Jail in Port Blair. Each and every display in there made me emotional. The gallery dedicated to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose is definitely not to be missed.

San Thome Museum, Varca,Goa

The other museum I went just before the lockdown was the San Thome Museum in Goa. It contains a range of music systems, typewriters, bottles of beer, timers, and ceramic boards. Did you know that there is a museum present at Mumbai Airport? It’s known as The Jaya He Museum.

Moving Constants Display at Jaya He (CSMIA)

I guess most of you must have seen the art panels especially while coming out from the arrival area. During our recent trip to Goa, since me and my husband reached the airport a bit early. So I grabbed an opportunity to go through the Art Panels in the Departures. The viewer can have an in-depth knowledge about these panels by downloading the Jaya He Museum App. Moving Constants and Green Transitions were two panels that piqued my interest.

For me museums are the place where I can just be myself. Talk with the sculptures, listen to the music being played, just keep on staring at the paintings for hours together. I miss going to museums these days. I know it’s possible to virtually visit on the Google Arts and Culture Page but it’s not that happening
